
Softball Concludes Fall Season with Sweep of Campbellsville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team wrapped up the 2014-15 fall season with a doubleheader sweep of Campbellsville Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards defeated the Tigers 9-4 in the first game and 8-1 in the nightcap.
"We played much better today than we did at the start of the fall season," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "This weekend we made a lot of progress. The communication was better, and we found our rhythm. I thought we hit pretty well and Madi Norman did a good job on the mound. We missed a few opportunities to take extra bases, but overall I was pleased with today's effort."
Louisville 9 - Campbellsville 4
In game one, Campbellsville took a 1-0 lead in the second when Erin Benton and Brianna Scott walked and advanced on a groundout. Benton scored on a fielder's choice by Jacqueline Roof that saw Scott out at the plate for the third out of the inning.
The Cardinals answered in the home half of the inning when Kristina Dillard reached on an error, took second when Sydney Benz walked and came around to score on an RBI single by Kelsi Jones.
The Tigers pulled ahead in the third. Brittany Rippy reached on an error and took second on an infield hit by Kristin Benton. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. A groundout by Hailey Szpila gave Campbellsville a 2-1 lead.
Louisville regained the lead when Brittany Duncan's two-run shot over the right field fence plated freshman Sidney Melton who had led off the bottom of the third with a single. In the fourth inning, Whitney Arion walked, stole second and crossed the plate on an RBI hit by Melton to bring the score to 4-2.
The Tigers evened the score in the fifth when Roof led off with a single and Brittany Rippy doubled to set up Kristin Benton's two-run single.
The Cards put up a five-spot in the fifth. McNary got the inning started with an RBI single which plated Morgan Meyer. Kristina Dillard followed with a two-run double. Kelsi Jones connected on an RBI triple and then crossed the plate on an error to make the score9-4.
Jones led the Cardinals offensively, going 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs. Pufahl, Melton and Duncan also had two hits apiece. Maryssa Becker gave up three earned runs and struck out five in 4.1 innings. Tiarra Sanabria allowed one unearned run and struck out two in 2.2 innings. Victoria Decker allowed nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits and struck out three in 6.0 innings. Kristin Benton was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Tigers at the plate.
Louisville 8 - Campbellsville 1
In game two, the Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Sidney Melton singled and scored on Nicole Pufahl's double. Soles singled to drive in Pufahl.
Louisville added two more runs in the second when Autumn McDuffie and Sydney Benz delivered back-to-back singles. An error moved the runners and McDuffie came home on a groundout by Madi Norman. Sidney Melton followed with an RBI single to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Jacqueline Roof registered a one-out single, took second on an error and scored on Kristin Benton's RBI hit.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the third when Hailey Smith delivered a leadoff single and Soles sent a shot over the centerfield fence to make the score 6-1. UofL tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Sidney Melton walked and scored on Hailey Smith's triple. An error sent Smith home to increase the Cards' lead to 8-1.
Madi Norman got the win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out six in 7.0 innings. Autumn McDuffie went 3 for 3 to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Soles was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Melton went 2 for 2 with two runs. Hailey Smith and Morgan Meyer also had two hits.
Neely Quint took the loss giving up eight runs, seven earned on 13 hits and striking out one. Kristin Benton was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Roof was 1 for 2 with a run.
