Cards collect donations for the Prevention, Education and Advocacy on Campus and Community as part of UofL's Week Without Violence campaign
The University of Louisville's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spearheaded efforts of the student-athlete body to collect donations for the Prevention, Education and Advocacy on Campus and Community (PEACC) program during the university's Week Without Violence campaign.
Members of SAAC sold "Student-Athletes Rally Against Violence" shirts to their teammates for $5 each. Cardinal student-athletes were encouraged to wear their shirts on Tuesday, Sept. 30 to show their support of PEACC and the Week Without Violence. A record total of $1,400 was collected and donated at the campus' annual Take Back the Night rally, the highlight of the Week Without Violence. Over 100 student-athletes sported their shirts while attending the rally held on campus in support of the cause.
This marks the sixth year SAAC has participated in this campus event as well as the highest amount ever donated to PEACC.
"Out of the last four years, this was definitely the year with the most evident participation and support from the student-athletes," said SAAC President Becca Maddock (Field Hockey). "It was nice see the student-athletes rally against such a popular issue in the media today like violence, and show their support to PEACC."
Maddock was joined on stage by fellow SAAC executive board member Andrew Stewart (Track & Field) and they presented the check to Sally Evans, Interim Director of the PEACC program.
PEACC works to provide a network of resources for those in the University of Louisville community to address, prevent and respond to violence against women. PEACC also provides advocacy and assistance to those affected by violence as well as coordinates and conducts training and education efforts including those with student-athletes. Week Without Violence is a campus campaign focus on raising awareness, promoting attitude change and action towards ending violence in their communities.
Members from each Louisville athletic team comprise the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. SAAC provides a voice for Cardinals between the UofL Athletic Administration and the student-athlete body. SAAC also works to encourage involvement of student-athletes in campus and community projects.
