The University of Louisville's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spearheaded efforts of the student-athlete body to collect donations for the Prevention, Education and Advocacy on Campus and Community (PEACC) program during the university's Week Without Violence campaign.
Members of SAAC sold "Student-Athletes Stand Strong Against Violence" shirts to their teammates for $5 each. Cardinal student-athletes were encouraged to wear their shirts on Tuesday, September 24 to show their support of PEACC and the Week Without Violence. A total of $1000 was collected and donated at the campus' annual Take Back the Night rally, the highlight of the Week Without Violence. Over 175 student-athletes attended the rally held on campus.
This marks the fifth year SAAC has participated in this campus event as well as the highest amount ever donated to PEACC. "We get involved each year because we believe in the message of PEACC and all the good work they do for all the students here at UofL. The shirts and donation are our of showing our support," said SAAC Co-President Monica Negron (Lacrosse) after her and fellow co-president Becca Maddock (Field Hockey) presented the check to Sharon LaRue, Director of the PEACC program.
PEACC works to provide a network of resources for those in the University of Louisville community to address, prevent and respond to violence against women. PEACC also provides advocacy and assistance to those affected by violence as well as coordinates and conducts training and education efforts. Week Without Violence is a campus campaign focus on raising awareness, promoting attitude change and action towards ending violence in their communities.
Members from each Louisville athletic team comprise the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. SAAC provides a voice for Cardinals between the UofL Athletic Administration and the student-athlete body. SAAC also works to encourage involvement of student-athletes in campus and community projects. To stay connected with UofL's SAAC follow them on Twitter: @UofLSAAC.
