
Five Cardinals Earn WGCA All-American Scholar Honors

Louisville, Ky. - Five Louisville players were named Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars today. The WGCA honored a total of 644 women's collegiate golfers in Divisions I, II and III with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.
Louisville's Candice Wiley, Emily Haas, Katie Petrino, Laura Restrepo and Meghan Theiss were all named All-American Scholars. Haas and Petrino earn the honor for the second straight year while the senior Wiley earns it for the first time in her four seasons. Freshmen Restrepo and Theiss marks the second consecutive year the Cardinals have had two freshmen named All-American Scholars.
It is the second academic award for Haas this season. She was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II First team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announce on Thursday. The eight all-district teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The sophomore carries a 3.98 grade point average in biology. Haas was a first team All-BIG EAST selection after finishing third at the 2013 BIG EAST Championships in May. She led the team with a 74.5 stroke average this season. She finished the year with five Top 10 finishes and one Top 20 finish. Haas shot a collegiate low round of 68 in the second round of the BIG EAST Championship. Haas won the Cardinal Cup after setting a new record with a score of 209.
Wiley finished the year ranked fifth on the team with a 77.3 stroke average. The senior's best finished was tied for 12th in the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge. Petrino finished the year ranked fourth on the team with a 76.8 stroke average. Her best finish was tied for 17th in the BIG EAST Championship.
Restrepo and Theiss had stellar freshmen years. Restrepo finished the year ranked third on the team with a 76.3 stroke average. She had a Top 10 finish of seventh in the BIG EAST Championship. Restrepo earned All-BIG EAST honors in her rookie year. Theiss finished her freshman season with a 79.5 stroke average. She had her best finish tied at 33rd in the Cardinal Cup and shot a collegiate low round of 70.
The Cardinals also earned the team GPA Award at the Red and Black Honors Banquet and Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony earlier this year. All eight Cardinals were also named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in the spring.
