LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sixteen University of Louisville track and field student-athletes will be vying for spots to compete at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning this week, as they head to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Greensboro, N.C.
The event runs from Thursday, May 23-25, at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track, inside of Aggie Stadium. Live results can be accessed through FlashResults.com.
Each individual event group in Greensboro will consist of 48 athletes, with 24 teams in each of the relays. The top-12 individuals in each event from Greensboro and the 12 in each event from Austin, Texas - site of the West Preliminary Rounds - will comprise the 24 athlete and relay team fields that will compete at Oregon University's Hayward Field from June 5-8 at the NCAA Championships.

On the first day, the Cardinals will have six athletes, including three throwers, in competition. Steve Wade opens in the discus at 10 a.m. and Hannah Baker and Amashi Kendall, the 2013 BIG EAST discus champion, take part in the women's competition at 3:30 p.m. Louisville's remaining athletes consist of Calvin Arsenault (400m hurdles), Margret Harris (100m), and Tyler Byrne (10,000m). Arsenault took part in the event last year, running in the 110m hurdles.
Should Arsenault and Harris advance out of their first-round competitions, seven Cardinals will be competing on Friday. After a pair of throwing events to begin the day, three-time All-American Michelle Kinsella is slated to participate in the high jump at 6 p.m. She won the BIG EAST indoor title this year in the event and is currently ranked third in the region after tying the outdoor school record at 1.86m/6-1.25.
The Cardinals close the second of the three-day event with two 3,000m steeplechase events. Benadate Cheruiyot, who improved her time by more than 18 seconds this year, will compete in the women's section of the event at 8:50 p.m. Mattias Wolter, the 2013 BIG EAST champion in the event, participated in last year's preliminary competition and will headline the men's race at 9:30 p.m. Wolter ranks fourth in the region with a career-best time of 8:43.73.
The team concludes its stay in Greensboro on Saturday with three field events, two of which take part on the throws field.
In Louisville's only morning competition, Sam Bombaugh, Nils Westrich, and Sebastian Lenz are scheduled to compete in the hammer throw. Bombaugh, who holds a top-15 position in the event, broke the 20-year-old school record earlier this year with a toss of 62.94m/206-6. The junior has won three BIG EAST event titles this year, capturing the indoor weight throw and shot put titles and the outdoor hammer throw crown.
On the women's side, Kendall, competing in her second event of the meet, and Slinden will take part in shot put. Much like the discus, Kendall currently holds a top-15 ranking in the shot put.
Louisville wraps up the meet in the men's high jump, with Chrisjaan Smith. The freshman, who cleared the bar at a season-best 2.14m/7-0.25, has the fourth-best freshman mark in the region.
