Track and Field Has Strong Opening at Tiger Track Classic

ATLANTA - The University of Louisville track and field teams had a strong opening day at the Auburn Tigers Track Classic on Friday in Auburn, Ala.
The Cardinals had eight throwers compete in the first day of competition at Hutsell-Rosen Track, with each one registering a top-10 finish.
On the men's side, Sam Bombaugh led a 4-5-6-7 finish in the hammer throw invite with a toss of 59.99m/196-10. His school record and season-best mark 62.94m/206-6 that he achieved last week currently ranks 10th nationally. Nils Westrich took fifth, Sebastian Lenz set a season best to take sixth, and Brad Vivace rounded out the group with a seventh-place showing.
Patrice Gates led the women's group with a third-place showing in the women's hammer throw event. Amashi Kendall, who posted a season-best 56.70m/186-0, took fourth in the competition, and Hannah Baker checked in at No. 10.
Louisville's only other event of the day came in the women's javelin, where Katie Wimpari earned a fifth-place finish on an eight-foot season-best (39.48m/129-6).
The Cardinals return to action for day two of the Tiger Track Classic on Saturday, April 6, at 11 a.m.
