
Women's Tennis Downs Seton Hall; Advances in BIG EAST

The No. 3-seeded University of Louisville women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the BIG EAST Championship with a 4-0 win over Seton Hall Thursday afternoon at Varsity Courts in Tampa, Florida on the campus of the University of South Florida.
U of L started off strongly by winning the doubles point. Manueal Velasquez and Mandy Brown made quick work of Anna Guryanova and Alex Landert. Becky Bodine and Stefanie Villajuan combined to beat Madison Shoemaker and Julia Keenan at No. 2 to clinch the point.
As singles began, UofL's Becky Bodine picked up the first individual point of the match from the No. 6 position with a 6-1, 6-0 win over SHU senior Karina Cordero. After dropping the first set 6-0, SHU's Madison Shoemaker gave Louisville senior Mandy Brown a battle but Brown prevailed 7-6 margin in the second to take the point.
In the No. 2 slot, junior Rocio Portela was matched up against Rebecca Shine, the fourth-ranked player in the Ohio Valley region according to the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional rankings. Shine took the match in straight sets 6-2., 6-3, clinching the team victory for the Cardinals.
U of L advances to play Rutgers at noon on Friday.
In other BIG EAST action:
No. 2 seed USF shutout No. 15 seed Villanova 4-0 to begin the morning at the USF Varsity Courts, while No. 10 seed Pittsburgh had the only upset of the day as it knocked off No. 7 seed Georgetown 4-1. The marathon match lasted 3:43 minutes. Elsewhere, No. 8 seed Marquette topped No. 9 seed Cincinnati 4-0 on the P.E. Courts.
In the afternoon sessions, No. 3 seed Louisville defeated No. 14 seed Seton Hall 4-0 on the Varsity Courts, while No. 5 seed DePaul dispatched No. 12 seed Providence by the same result, 4-0 on the P.E. Courts. In addition, No. 4 seed Syracuse squeezed No. 13 seed Connecticut 4-0 on the Varsity Courts. In the final result of the afternoon, No. 6 seed Rutgers slipped past No. 11 seed St. John's 4-2 on Andros Courts.
