LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field teams head south this weekend to participate in the two-day Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational at the Vanderbilt Track Complex in Nashville, Tenn.
The opening day of competition, Friday, begins at 4 p.m. with four different field events, and action continues on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Louisville opened its outdoor season last weekend at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Amashi Kendall (shot put) was the lone field competitor to earn a win, while Ernest Kibet (1,500m) and Michelle Molodynia (3,000m) captured victories on the track in their respective events.
On the first day, Louisville will send eight different competitors - four men, four women - to participate in the hammer throw. At the same time, the men's and women's shot put events will be taking place. Though early in the season, Sam Bombaugh ranks fifth in the country in the hammer throw.
The nightcap features four invitational races, two at 1,500m and two at the 3,000m distance. Andrew Stewart and Evan Hibbs are set to compete in the men's 1,500m, while Michelle Molodynia will take part in the women's section.
Saturday morning features another slew of throwers competing in the discus and javelin competitions. Other early field events include the men's and women's high jump, pole vault and the long jump competitions. Chrisjaan Smith, competing in his first outdoor season, placed third as a freshman in the high jump at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
Naadira Taylor, who is competing in the triple jump on Friday, will participate in the women's long jump competition on Saturday with Brittany Owens, Kim Cardeiro, and Hannah Cox.
Track events commence at 11:25 a.m., and some of the first races include the men's and women's 4x100m relays.
In the sprints, Calvin Arsenault is scheduled to compete in the 110m hurdles as well as the 400m hurdles. Michael Thompson and Raymond Davis are slated to race in the 100m events, and Lauren Drayton, Nitaya Walker, and Tatiana Jouett will lineup in the women's section of the event.
Mattias Wolter will be making his first appearance in the steeplechase this season, competing at the 2,000m distance in the event. Wolter held one of the top marks last year and advanced to the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in the 3,000m event.
