
Cardinals Earn the Fifth Seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament

Louisville, Ky. - The No. 5-seeded Cardinals will host 12th-seed Middle Tennessee State (25-7, 17-3 Sun Belt) at the KFC Yum! Center in the first round of NCAA Tournament on Sunday, March 24 at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET in a game televised on ESPN2. The No. 4 seeded Purdue Boilermakers will play the 13th seed Liberty in the first game at noon in the Oklahoma City Regional.
Louisville (24-8, 11-5 in the BIG EAST Conference) is making its 16th NCAA Tournament appearance and seventh appearance in the last eight years. U of L enters the tournament ranked 16th in the nation after finishing tied for third in the BIG EAST conference and advancing to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. The Cardinals have reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in three of the past five seasons. U of L made its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 2009, falling to UConn 76-54 in the title game.
Junior point guard Shoni Schimmel leads the team in scoring and assists with 13.8 points and assists with 3.7 per game. Sophomore Sara Hammond is second on the team in scoring with 10.7 points per game while leading the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game. Junior guard Antonita Slaughter, an All-BIG EAST performer, ranks third on the team in scoring with 9.8 points per game and second in rebounding with 4.9 boards per game.
