Women's Tennis Falls to #23 Cal State Irvine

The No. 71 ranked Cardinals fell 4-3 to the No. 23-ranked UCI women's tennis Thursday at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. The Anteaters took the doubles point and then held off the Cardinals in three of the six singles matches.

UCI (12-3, 3-0) doubles came from behind to earn the crucial doubles point. The Cardinals' Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine beat the #55 pair of Franziska Goettsching and Kristina Smith. The No. 2 pair of Mandy Brown and Manuela Velasquez fell 8-3 at No. 2 to Marivick Mamit and Sarah Stadfelt. The final doubles match went 9-8 (3) before Becky Bodine and Manuela Velasquez fell at No. 3 to give Irvine the doubles point.

The `Eaters won the first singles point as Kat Facey beat Becky Bodine 6-3, 6-2 and then the second point when Fellerhoff fell to #101 Kristina Smith 7-6, 6-2. Cardinal senior Stefanie Villajuan dropped a three-setter 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 4 to give CSI the clinching point. U of L did not give up, taking the No. 2 slot when Rebecca Shine won 6-4, 6-4 over Marivick Mamiit. Velasquez gave U of L another point with a 7-5, 2-6, 1-1 (10-5) win at No. 3 over Franziska Goettsching. Mandy Brown won 7-6, 6-4 over Sarah Stadfelt at No. 5.
