NEW YORK - The University of Louisville track and field teams open the outdoor season this week with the 2013 Shamrock Invitational in Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Cardinals begin the three-day event that is hosted by Coastal Carolina University and the City of Myrtle Beach on Thursday, March 14.
The school's indoor season concluded with a pair of All-Americans and fifth- and sixth-place finishes by the men's and women's teams, respectively, at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
Louisville is only competing in one event on the first day of competition, as Sam Bombaugh leads a quartet in the hammer throw at 11 a.m. Bombaugh had a stellar ending to his indoor season, as he was named BIG EAST Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet upon winning the weight throw and shot put conference titles.
Day two features a slew of competitions, beginning with the field events in the morning. The first race on the track is the 100m in which five Cardinals, including four women, will run.
Later in the day, Calvin Arsenault will take part in the 110m hurdles trials at 5:30 p.m. Arsenault finished his indoor season this year by breaking the 60m hurdles record and placing third at the BIG EAST Championships. He's also scheduled to run in the 400m hurdles on Saturday.
The team finishes the day with a pair of distance events. Louisville has three freshmen in Leah Kiyohara, Agnes Chepchumba, and Benadate Cheruiyot slated to run in the 5,000m at 6:45 p.m.
Louisville's throwers open Saturday in the discus, javelin, and shot put competitions. Bombaugh, Brad Vivace, and Steve Wade, who will participate in the shot put at 10 a.m., finished 1-2-3 at the conference indoor championships in February.
In one of the first track events of the day, the Cardinals will line up six men in the 1,500m.
The day progresses with the day sprint events, and Chrisjaan Smith, who earned all-BIG EAST indoor high honors as a freshman, begins his outdoor campaign in the event at 1 p.m. He cleared 2.12m/6-11.50 to finish third at the conference championships.
Louisville wraps up its stay in South Carolina with the men's and women's 200m and 3,000m events.
