MILWAUKEE - No. 13/12 Louisville withstood a late run from Marquette Tuesday evening at the Al McGuire Center for a 64-63 BIG EAST road victory. The Cardinals (16-4, 4-2 BIG EAST) were led by 19 points from junior point guard Shoni Schimmel, while Antonita Slaughter added 14. Sophomore forward Sara Hammond chipped in her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles (10-8, 2-3 BIG EAST) trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half but took a 63-62 lead from a Katie Young 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining. Monique Reid took the inbounds pass from Schimmel the length of the court for the Cards' only fastbreak basket of the night for a 64-63 lead with seven seconds remaining.
Marquette had one final look for the win but freshman point guard Brooklyn Pumroy had trouble getting the ball up the court and Young's final attempt from deep was blocked by Bria Smith as time expired.
Young and junior Katherine Plouffe paced the Golden Eagles with 17 points apiece, while Pumroy chipped in 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor with just one turnover.
Louisville jumped out to a 41-37 lead to start the second half, holding Marquette to 1-of-6 shooting from the floor and six turnovers during that stretch.
The Cardinals capitalized on the sluggish start by the Golden Eagles out of the break and took a 54-44 advantage on Schimmel's third 3-pointer of the second half. MU took a 35-32 lead into the intermission after shooting a combined 46.7 percent (14-of-30) in the first 20 minutes.
Slaughter paced the Cardinals out to a 14-5 lead while connecting on her first four attempts from long range. The junior was guarded closely on the perimeter the remainder of the first half as U of L shot just 1-of-9 from three over the final 16:49 of the first half.
The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 27-21 on a Pumroy 3-pointer. Pumroy's basket capped a 16-2 run by Marquette in which the Golden Eagles connected on six straight field goal attempts.
Louisville finished the game shooting 37.1 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from behind the arc. Marquette finished the game shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from behind the arc. Marquette held a 40-32 rebounding advantage.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 27 as they host Georgetown at 1:30 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center. ESPNU will air the game.
