LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Charlyn Corral scored a pair of goals while sophomore Erin Yenney added a goal and an assist to lead the Louisville women's soccer team to a dominating 6-0 victory over St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park.
The Cardinals, who improved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in BIG EAST Conference action with the win, finished with their highest goal total since a 7-0 win over Evansville on Sept. 10, 2004. The Red Storm dropped to 4-7-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league games with the loss.
"It's exactly the response we needed after the performance we had on Friday night, so I'm happy," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We focused on having more energy and more enthusiasm. We focused on the demands of each of our players' positional roles and at the end of the day, I think that's why we got the outcome we did."
The Cardinals wasted little time in taking command in Sunday's match as Yenney (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) scored inside the left post following a rebound on an earlier shot in the eighth minute to give Louisville the 1-0 lead. The goal was the fourth of the season for Yenney and marked her second straight game with a goal. She has scored at least a point in three straight matches overall.
Later in the opening half, Corral (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnologico de Monterrey) connected for her first goal of the day when she beat St. John's goalkeeper Meredith Kenyon inside the left post from 12 yards away in the 30th minute for the 2-0 advantage. Yenney and sophomore Devyn Ciotti (Liberty, Ohio/Lakota West HS) were credited with assists on the goal.
The Cardinals pushed their lead to 3-0 late in the first half when junior Christine Exeter (Pickering, Ont./Pickering HS) took a free kick from Ciotti in the 42nd minute and scored from eight yards away inside the left post. The goal for Exeter was her first of the season and the 22nd of her career, while the two assists on the day for Ciotti take her season total to three.
After taking the three-goal lead into the halftime break, the Cardinals pushed their advantage to 4-0 in the 52nd minute of action when Corral controlled a rebound directly in front of the goal following a missed shot and found the back of the net for her third career goal. Junior Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) joined the goal-scoring frenzy seven minutes later when she headed in a crossing pass from freshman Hannah Konermann (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) in the 59th minute for a 5-0 lead. The goal for Uremovich was her team-leading eighth of the season and the 17th of her career, while the assist for Konermann was her first.
The final goal of day came in the 61st minute when junior Katie Walz (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart HS) took a cross from Exeter and scored inside the right post from 22 yards away for her second goal of the season. The goal capped a dominant day for Louisville, which finished with a 27-6 advantage in shots and a 15-3 edge in shots on-goal. The Cardinals also had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) turned away three St. John's shots to clinch her fifth save of the season and the 15th of her career. Kiefer is one shutout shy of tying Meredith Miller (2001-04) for second on the Cardinals' career shutout list at 16.
Up next, Louisville returns to the road for BIG EAST matches at No. 21 Marquette (Friday, 8 p.m., ET) and USF (Sunday, 1 p.m.) next weekend.
