Rowing Begins Fall with Red & Black Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing program kicked off the fall racing season with the sixth annual Red & Black Day on Saturday morning at the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center.
Saturday's event began with a welcome from head coach, Derek Copeland and was followed by introductions of the Louisville rowers and coaching staff. After the Cardinals' award winners from the previous season were recognized, the team contested six scrimmage races before closing the event with a cookout for the rowers and coaches sponsored by Fischer's.
"We have been making a few technical changes to our rowing stroke," said Copeland. "They have been patient and have worked very hard at this new style, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it is working. It was a beautiful day to share our sport, our facility, and our team with the community. It was a great opportunity for our family and friends to see, firsthand, how unified this group has become."
The racing, which began at approximately 9:45 a.m., ET, was comprised of five intrasquad matches and one alumnae race. The first race of the day was a mixed varsity eights with the red crew earning a win over the black crew. In the second race, a crew of 2012 newcomers defeated a crew of former walk-ons in a fours event.
The third race of the day featured a crew of freshmen defeating a crew of seniors in a fours sprint, while in the fourth race, a crew of juniors defeated a crew of sophomores in a fours event. The fifth race of the day featured an international boat of Cardinals defeating a crew of American rowers in a fours race. And in the finale, the Cardinals' alumnae crew earned a win over a crew of freshmen and sophomores in eights action.
Up next, Louisville will compete in a set of scrimmage races at Indiana on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
