As part of the student-athlete development program, LCare, the University of Louisville Athletic Department hosted Mark Matteson, author of Freedom from Fear last week. The seminar was open to all Cardinal student-athletes to motivate and assist them in building the skills needed to set and achieve their goals.
Matteson, author of nine books with two on the way, has been a notable motivational speaker for over the last 20 years. Matteson offers tools of empowerment and lessons to better inspire his audience to be the best they can be. Freedom from Fear, Matteson's international bestseller, is a `how to' on improving your attitude and mindset towards life.
Matteson challenged the student-athlete to raise their performance through effective goal setting. The message highlighted techniques of how to live your life to the fullest, understand your learning type (kinesthetic, visual, or auditory) and set goals accordingly for maximum achievement.
Mark's humorous and captivating stories made this a highly entertaining program packed full of helpful lessons regarding goal setting, personal growth and productivity. The program began with an interactive lecture with the audience, including a couple of book giveaways to the most enthusiastic volunteers. A bit of audience participation was required as Matteson taught the group how to set five practical and beneficial goals; sharing key tips along the way such as when setting a goal "go through it not to it" and the four P's to follow when setting goals "positive, powerful, personal, and present tense."
"Because I'm more of a visual learner, I learned that I should find a picture of my goal and post that someplace where I can see it everyday to remind myself what I'm working towards," commented Jordan Trimble, a senior on the softball team. Lacrosse senior, Katie Oliverio, said the best piece of advice she got from Matteson was "to set your goals `through, not to.' We don't just want to get to the BIG EAST Championships, we want to win it."
The morning concluded with a Q&A session followed by a book signing for the complimentary books provided by LCare. The lecture offered simple and realistic tools the audience could put to use immediately to help them not only in their athletic careers, but also in their academic and personal endeavors.
