The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Akron Friday afternoon in Akron, Ohio. The Cardinals dropped the doubles point and a spirited comeback in singles fell short.
"This was a tough loss to take," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "We were right there to steal a win against a very good team. Every time we play them, the match is a 4-3 battle and takes four hours. Today was no different. We fought as hard as we could. We have people battling colds right now and we still fought extremely hard. We are going to regroup and get better from a match like this. "
After dropping the doubles point, Akron went up 2-0 when Angelina Jogasurika finished off Mandy Brown 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. U of L senior Sarah Miller rolled 6-2, 6-2 over Ksenia Berestetska at No. 6, to bring the Cards within one at 2-1. Gabrielle Duncan tied the score at two with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 over Angelika Jogasuria. But No. 1 singles went to Akron when Zara Harutyunyan beat Julia Fellerhoff 6-2, 6-3. Olga Shkundina edged freshman Manuela Velasquez at No. 3 in the three setter to clinch the match. At No. 2, Rebecca Shine won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 over Prang Pantusart.
