LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following a season-opening meet in which 25 BIG EAST qualifying marks were achieved, the University of Louisville track and field teams return to action for their second indoor meet of the year, competing at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, beginning Friday, Jan. 13, and continuing on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The two-day event will take place at E.J. Nutter Field House, and live results will be available on www.UKathletics.com. Competition on Friday begins at 6 p.m. and resumes on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
In total, 12 schools will be competing at the meet. On the women's side, the Cardinals will face Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Marshall, Miami (Fla.), Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Bellarmine, Eastern Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. The men's team will face off against Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami (Fla.), Middle Tennessee and Tennessee.
The Cardinals will be competing in six field events on Friday, including the men's and women's weight throw, the women's long jump and the men's high jump. Michael Edwards had a strong showing in the season-opener in the high jump, clearing 2.20m/7-2.5 for the third-best mark in the nation. Margret Harris also put together a respectable performance in the jumping events, winning the long jump with a personal-best 6.00m/19-8.25. In the throwing events, Amashi Kendall won the weight throw with a toss of 18.55m/60-10.5, while Sam Bombaugh heaved the weight 18.51m/60-8.75 for a runner-up finish.
On day two, the Cardinal women open competition in the high jump and triple jump, while the men will be competing in the pole vault and shot put. Kevin Jackson took second last week in the pole vault by clearing a personal-best 4.90m/16-0.75.
The first track event Louisville takes part in is set for 12:30 p.m., as Gabrielle Jackson and Calvin Arsenault will compete in the women's and men's 60m hurdles semifinals, respectively. Arsenault, a true freshman, won his first collegiate meet in the event. Arsenault will be competing in the 60m semifinals later in the day and is slated to run in the 4x400m relays.
Following the sprints races, the Cardinal distance runners will compete in the mile. Auburn transfer and three-time track All-American Holly Knight will be making her Louisville debut in the mile alongside Cassie Martin and Michelle Molodynia. Knight also is slated to compete in the 3,000m race.
Mattias Wolter will be making his season debut toward the end of the day in the men's 3,000m race.
The Cardinals conclude the day with the women's and men's 4x400m, respectively.
