Sophomore University of Louisville tennis player Becca Shine won the Draw A Singles at the prestigious Michigan State Spartan Invitational Sunday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
Shine, who also won the Draw B doubles championship with Gabrielle Duncan on Saturday, dropped her first set 3-6 before roaring back with a vengeance taking the next two sets 6-2, 6-0 over Mimi Nguyen of Michigan for the win.
"This has been a very impressive showing by Becca. For her to win her doubles event with a partner she had never played with before the weekend and then to win the top flight of singles really shows how good of an all-around player she is," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "We have been coming to this tournament for four or five years and this was the highest level of competition we have faced. There are two nationally ranked players and two starters from a top 10 Michigan team in this draw, so for Becca to win a tournament of this quality just shows her will to be a great player. She is improving at a scary rate right now."
