University of Louisville sophomore Julia Fellerhoff, the second seed in singles, took home the inaugural singles title at Ohio State's 2011 Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational, upsetting 118th-ranked Zara Harutyunyan of Akron, 6-4, 7-5 for the victory.
"Julia starts off her sophomore season right where she left off last year," said Mark Beckham, U of L head coach. "This is the fourth college tournament she has won in her short career. I'm extremely happy with Julia's progress and she just keeps proving that she is one of the best players in college tennis."
On Saturday, Fellerhoff defeated Akron's Olga Shkundina of Akron 7-6, 6-4 to advance to face Prang Pantusart of Akron, whom she edged in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9) for the comeback win. That set up the finals for last year's BIG EAST freshman of the year.
Teammate Becca Shine beat Ball State's Sarah Hebble 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (7) and beat Kentucky's Edmee Morin 7-6, 6-2 before falling to Zara Harutyunyan of Akron 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Shine and Fellerhoff combined to beat Safiyya Ismail and Jasmine Lee of Cincinnati before losing to Harutyunyan and Pantusart 8-6 which bounced them to the consolation bracket where they fell to Kelsey Dieters and Kara Cecil of Ohio State 8-2.
