Vancover, Canada - We got another good win tonight, Cards fans! After a day of relaxing at the hotel and shopping on Robson Street, we were ready to come out and play in a match up with Trinity Western University.
The coaches used this game to experiment with the lineup. With such depth at each position, we could have any combination of us on the floor at the same time. Jude, Bria, Asia, Sara, and Cierra started the first quarter. Asia gave us an early lead with a layup after the tip. The lead quickly extended to 10 just three minutes into the game. At the 3:56 mark, Antonita shot faked from the wing, drove to the basket, and finished with contact. She the free throws to put us up 15-6. The last two possessions of the quarter, Shoni found Monique for two easy buckets. One was a crazy behind the head pass, those two of make a dangerous combo!
Cierra's outside jumper gave us a 40-9 advantage four minutes into the second quarter. Bria and Tia were active on defense jumping in the passing lanes and getting key steals. With 2:47 left in the first half, we ran a baseline out of bounds play that got Asia open on the block for a layup. Jude hit a last second shot at the buzzer to put us up 58-19 at the half.
Our size advantage was too much for the Spartans. Cierra had 12 points and five rebounds at the break. Antonita, Sheronne, and Asia poured in eight points apiece. Jude found the open players and dished out four assists.
Bria, Shoni, Tia, Sara, and Monique started the second half. Sara scored just nine seconds into the third quarter. Shoni dished the ball to Tia and Monique on consecutive possessions. She was dropping dimes everywhere! With the shot clock winding down, Becky hit a clutch three, giving us an 80-28 advantage. Shawnta' powered her way between multiple defenders for a rebound and put back. Her strength is just what we need in the post.
We opened up the final quarter with a 13-1 run. With 5:58 left to play, Sara saved the ball from going out of bounds by passing the ball to Asia. Asia found Jude spotting up on the wing and kicked it out to her for a three. Nothing but net! For the second game in a row, we surpassed the 100-point mark and went up 102 -35. After Bria blocked a shot in the last minute of the game, Antonita stole the ball and passed it ahead to Bria for an easy bucket. The final score rounded out to 112-43.
Our post players went to work tonight! Cierra registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Monique finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sheronne and Tia added 12 points each. The Schimmels kept racking up assists as Shoni dished out eight and Jude handed out five.
As much as we love winning games, the lessons we're learning are more important than the score. With such a talented group, scoring points will come easily. What we have to focus on now is defense. Guarding the dribble drive and applying ball pressure will be crucial to our success this season. Shelby and Jude were a nightmare for Trinity's guards, especially when they were in at the same time. They may be small, but they have a big defensive presence!
After a delicious postgame meal at East Side Mario's, we came back to the hotel to call it a night. The coaches have a special day planned for us tomorrow, so we've got to get some rest. We can't wait to tell you all about it! Until next time!
