NCAA East Preliminary Rounds Central
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With a trip to the national championships on the line, the University of Louisville track and field teams first must travel through the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Bloomington, Ind., at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.
The event spans three days, beginning on Thursday, May 26, with the Cardinals opening competition at 11 a.m. in the hammer throw. Action continues on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. and on Saturday, May 28, at 11 a.m. Live results and video, which will be streamed free of charge, can be accessed through IUHoosiers.com.
The fields in Bloomington will consist of 48 athletes in each of the individual events and 24 teams in each of the relays. The top-12 individuals or relay teams at the end of the weekend earn a trip to Des Moines, Iowa, from June 8-11, to participate in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The 12 in each event from Bloomington and the 12 in each event from Eugene, Ore. - site of the West Preliminary Rounds - will comprise the 24 athlete and relay team fields that will compete at Drake Stadium for the national title.
Tickets for the meet can be purchased at the Hoosiers' ticket office, located at the main entrance of its track and field complex. An all-session pass for adults is $35; single-session passes for students is $10 and $15 for adults. Children two and younger are admitted free of charge.
The Cardinals commence NCAA postseason action after a solid run at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships that saw the women capture their fourth-straight league title - a feat that only one other school, former conference member Miami (Fla.), has achieved in BIG EAST history - and the men finish third.
For the second-straight season, Louisville will be sending 23 athletes to the preliminaries, filling 30 slots.
Senior D'Ana McCarty, who earned a pair of All-America honors at last year's outdoor national championships, leads a strong contingent of throwers competing at the preliminaries. McCarty has qualified for the preliminaries in three throwing events, while Chinwe Okoro, Khadija Abdullah, Amashi Kendall and Weston Banks each are slated to throw in a pair of events. Regionally, McCarty ranks sixth in the shot put, sixth in the hammer throw and 12th in the discus throw.
In the jumps group, Rachel Gehret is set to participate in two events, the high jump, with Megan Schubert, and the long jump, with Charachesicia Lockhart. Gehret currently has the eighth-best high jump mark regionally. On the men's side, Michael Edwards and Neil Angermeier will take part in the high jump, while Seon Powell earned a spot in the long jump competition.
Last year's 3,000m steeplechase national champion Matt Hughes highlights the Cardinals competing in the track events. A senior, Hughes has won both steeplechase races he has competed in this season, including the BIG EAST outdoor title. He ranks sixth in the region and 11th nationally, while freshman teammate Mattias Wolter will be racing alongside. Wolter has the 14th-fastest time in the region, but more impressively, owns the fastest freshman time collegiately. Monica Hernandez is set to participate in the women's section of the event.
Seniors Matt Bruce and Michael Eaton also are set to run in the distance events, with Bruce earning a spot in the 5,000m, while Eaton filled an entry in the 10,000m. Eaton earned All-America honors in the event in 2008.
In the short-distance events, four Cardinals will be in action this weekend. Senior Saravia Richardson will compete in the 100m. Jordon Frazier will be racing in the men's 400m hurdles, while Chelsea Brown and Gabrielle Jackson will participate in the women's event.
