LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three University of Louisville track and field athletes - D'Ana McCarty, Kyle Gann and Mattias Wolter - earned weekly BIG EAST awards, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Wolter was named BIG EAST Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after registering the top time in the BIG EAST in the 3,000m steeplechase this season at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Wolter notched a career-best time of 8:51.92, the best in the conference and the 10th-best time nationally this season. He shaved eight seconds off his previous mark from April 9, the first time he competed in the event collegiately, and finished eighth in a competitive field. He is the only freshman to rank in the top 15 nationally in the event.
Gann earned BIG EAST Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week after winning the pole vault at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Gann cleared a height of 5.05m/16-6.75 to notch first place at the meet and set a career best in the event. The junior also set a school record, breaking the mark that he previously set at the 2008 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. It is the best mark in the conference during the outdoor season.
McCarty earned BIG EAST Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after placing in the top three in three separate throwing events at the Sea Ray Relays. She had three top-three finishes at the Sea Ray Relays, posting two season-best marks, with one as a career-best throw. Her hammer throw mark of 62.16m/203-11 ranks first in the BIG EAST and 10th nationally. Her career-best mark came in the discus, where she landed a third-place finish on a toss of 53.44m/175-4, which is top in the BIG EAST and 15th-best nationally. She rounded out her top-three finishes, with a third-place showing in the shot put, charting a mark of 15.55m/51-0.25.
The Cardinals compete in their second home outdoor event of the season on Friday, April 22, at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational. Field events start at 10:30 a.m., with the track events beginning at 3 p.m. at Cardinal Park Track and Soccer Stadium. Live results will be available on UofLsports.com.
