LOUISVILLE, Ky, - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team upset No. 23 Indiana 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals improve to 13-11 and remain undefeated (10-0) on their home court this season with 22 straight victories dating back to April, 2009.
"Indiana came here rolling with a lot of momentum with wins over Illinois and Michigan," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They are serious contenders to win the Big 10 Championship. I am so impressed with Coach Randy Bloemendahl and how he has developed this team. We got back to our normal team tennis today. We are normally a team that gets contribution from all nine spots. If a few spots fail, we have enough to win. One and two doubles performed very wel. Getting wins from Viktor, Ale, and Dante was the breath of fresh air that we needed. Today's MVP was Simon Childs - he won 6-0, 6-0 which is normally unheard of at the top 25 level."
The Cards took the doubles point to start the match. Viktor Maksimcuk and Simon Childs teamed to beat Santiago Gruter and Jeremy Langer 8-3 at No. 1 while Alejandro Calligari and Robert Hall secured the point with an 8-3 win over Stephen Vogl and Josh MacTaggart at the two-spot. IU's Isade Juneau and Will Kendall topped Austen Childs and Adam Donaldson 8-5 at No. 3.
Louisville got singles wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 to close out the match. Simon Childs quickly added to the lead when he beat Claes Goransson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Maksimcuk, No. 103 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated No. 114 MacTaggart 6-2, 6-3 to make the score 3-0. No. 14 Austen Childs topped Gruter 6-2, 6-3 at the top seed to clinch the win. Calligari gave the Cardinals another point with his 7-6, 7-5 victory over Vogl at the five-spot.
Indiana's lone point came on court No. 4 where Robert Hall posted a 6-4 win in the first set, but Juneau picked up 6-3, 6-2 wins in the next two sets.
Dante Terenzio closed out the match with a 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 decision over Dimitrije Tasic at No. 6.
