The University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles points and five of six singles matches to beat a short-handed Austin Peay squad 6-1 Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"It was a good win for us," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "I am hoping it was a bit of a momentum builder for an important match tomorrow against Marquette. Today's match was everyone being efficient with no wasted energy. That was a point I stressed before the match. So I think we are prepared for our BIG EAST Conference match with Marquette as best as we can be."
The Cardinals took the doubles point by sweeping both matches. APSU was short a player, so Gabrielle Duncan and Sonia Bokhari won by default at No. 3. Stefanie Villajuan and Amelia Harris rolled 8-3 over Carolin Weikard and Andra Cornea at No. 2 to clinch the point. Julia Fellerhoff and Becca Shine made it a sweep with an 8-5 win over Vanja Tomic and Kimberly Loo at No. 1.
The Cardinals took their momentum into the singles , starting out with a point at No. 6 due to the lack of an opponent. Then Amelia Harris made fast work of Andra Cornea at No. 4, running the table 6-0, 6-0. Becca Shine rolled 6-0, 6-1 to clinch the match at No. 2 and Kaysara Mandry finished next at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Rachel Margolies. The Cardinals also got a win at No. 5 when Gabrielle Duncan came back after dropping her first set to win 3-6, 7-5, (10-5).
