Track and Field Sends Split Squads to Pair of Meets

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams will split squads at a pair of meets, with the mid-distance and distance groups traveling to the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., Friday, Feb. 4-5, and the sprints, jumps and throws groups heading to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, which also begins on Feb. 4.

The Cardinals begin competition in the later evening at the Meyo Invitational, starting at 6 p.m., with the last event beginning at 10:15 p.m. Action picks up on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m., with Louisville finishing the event at 12:50 p.m. in the men's 800m.

Matt Bruce, who will be competing for the first time this year in track, won the 5,000m race last season at the Meyo Invitational, with a time of 14:03.36. He is slated to compete in 3,000m race on the second day of competition. Also expected to make his season debut is senior Michael Eaton, who will compete in the 5,000m race on Friday.

Louisville opens the VT Elite Meet at Rector Field House at 5 p.m., with the Wesley Smith and Seon Powell competing in the long jump.

Saravia Richardson and Margret Harris open the track events, with the 60m preliminaries at 6:10 p.m. Richardson, who also will compete in the 200m invitational on day two, registered a pair of top-10 finishes last week at the Rod McCravy Memorial, taking third in the 60m finals and 10th in the 200m.

Following the last event of day one, which is set for an 8:40 p.m. start, Louisville will return for day two on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Cardinal men conclude the day, with Michael Edwards and Neil Angermeier competing in the high jump. Edwards has continually moved closer to registering an NCAA automatic qualifying mark (2.24m/7-4.25) and a school record (2.21m/7-3) in the event. Two weeks ago, he cleared 2.15m/7-0.5, and last week, he bettered his mark to 2.19m/7-2.25.

The women close out competition in the field events, with the shot put. D'Ana McCarty, who will compete in the weight throw on the first day at 5 p.m., will also compete in the shot put along with Khadija Abdullah, Chinwe Okoro and Amashi Kendall.

On the track side, the women finish the day, with the 4x400m relays. Last week at the McCravy Memorial (1/29), the quartet of Charachesicia Lockhart Ahlivia Spencer, Chelsea Brown and Margret Harris set the school record in the event, with a time of 3:44.98, breaking the previous record (3:46.09, set in 2009).
