EVANSTON, Ill. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team fell 1-0 to host No. 20 Northwestern Sunday afternoon in its regular season finale. The Cardinals (10-8, 3-3) will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Championship Nov. 4-6.
Just over 25 minutes into the contest, Northwestern's Kirsty Crampton Smith gained control of the ball in Cardinal territory, moved to the circle and dealt a pass Regan Mooney who gave the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.
Northwestern entered the break up 1-0 after holding the edge in shots 5-1 and penalty corners 2-1.
The Cardinals went on the attack in the second half, firing off seven shots to the Wildcats' two, holding a 3-1 advantage in corners. Northwestern goalkeeper Maddy Carpenter picked up three saves in the half to keep Louisville scoreless for the first time this season.
Junior Erin Conrad (10-8) collected two saves in the game.
The Cards have earned a No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Conference Championship and will face top-seeded and fourth-ranked Connecticut in the semifinals on Nov. 4 at 12:30 p.m. Fifth-ranked host Syracuse and Villanova will face off in the other semifinal. The winners will compete in the championship game, Sunday at 1 p.m.
