2011 Chatting with alums
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team hosted its third alumnae weekend Sept.30-Oct. 1. Twenty-three players, representing every season in the 12 year history of the program joined the Cards to wrap up the 2011-12 fall season.
"We had a tremendous turnout this weekend," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "This was a great opportunity for our current players to connect with those who helped build the program into what it is today."
The current team and alumnae opened the weekend at Ulmer Stadium Friday evening. Former players Kelly Blois and 2005 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year Aja Sherman took on pitching duties for both teams.
The current Cards got on the scoreboard in the first when Whitney Arion singled and came home on Maggie Ruckenbrod's base hit.
Kristi Rozelle's shot over the left centerfield fence opened up a seven-run second inning for the alums. Michelle Vasquez and Alma Navarette followed with singles and came home on an error. Sherman's three-run double capped off the inning. Sara Bausher's RBI double scored Kristi Cunningham in the third. Navarette led off the fifth with a single and scored on Vanessa James' base hit. Candi Hicks' sacrifice fly plated James.
After five innings, the teams entered the `Home Run Derby' portion of the evening. Despite a strong wind blowing in, All-American Lacy Wood powered two home runs for the alums, but it was the current Cards who won the final contest behind three straight home runs from freshman Trista Cox.
The weekend continued Saturday when the coaches and alums gathered to tailgate before the football game against Marshall.
