
Men's Soccer Defeats DePaul 1-0 on Wednesday Afternoon

Chicago, Ill. - The Louisville men's soccer team waited until the final minute to break a scoreless tie and defeat DePaul 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Wish Field. Redshirt freshman Alexander Obbey made the most of his first career start, scoring the game-winning goal with 36 seconds left in the game. The Cardinals improve to 9-5-2 on the year and 2-4-2 in BIG EAST play while the Blue Demons fall to 5-10-2 on the year and 2-5-1 in league play.
DePaul had a good start to the match, testing Andre Boudreaux in the second minute but the veteran came up with the save. The Cardinal attack then kicked in, taking possession back. Kenney Walker hit a shot wide left in the fourth minute. Austin Berry's header in the eighth minute was saved by the Blue Demons' keeper.
Louisville continued to put pressure on the DePaul defense. Colin Rolfe and Nick DeLeon had back-to-back shots on goal in the 14th minute but Eric Sorby made saves on both shots. Obbey had a shot saved in the 16th minute.
The Cardinals kept possession for the majority of the half. The Blue Demons' Kyle Gustafson had a shot in the 22nd minute that was blocked by the Cardinal defense. Walker's shot in the 25th minute was saved and his shot in the 29th minute was also saved. DePaul's leading scorer Antonio Aguilar had a shot in the 35th minute but Boudreaux made the diving save.
The Cardinals kept pressing into the final minutes and had a lot of opportunities on set pieces. DeLeon had an opportunity off a corner kick but a DePaul defender knocked it out of the goal in the 40th minute. DeLeon had another opportunity in the 41st minute but it was blocked by a defender.
Louisville finished the first half with a 10-4 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick advantage. Boudreaux finished with two saves and Eric Sorby finished with six.
DePaul took possession to start the second half, firing off three shots early. Neither team could get an offensive rhythm because of all the fouls called. DeLeon had a shot go just left on the 82nd minute. DePaul's Curtis Weir had his shot saved by Boudreaux in the 83rd minute. DeLeon had a shot blocked by a DePaul defender in the 85th minute. Boudreaux came up with big save in the 87th minute.
Louisville was awarded a corner kick in the final minute. DelPiccolo sent the corner into the box and Obbey brought it down on the back side and hit a low drive to the back post for the game-winner with 36 seconds remaining in the match. Louisville finished the game with a 14-10 shot advantage, including a 7-4 shots on goal advantage. Boudreaux finished with four saves while DePaul's keeper finished with six and one team save.
The Cardinals will wrap up the regular season on the road against Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
