St. Davids, Pa. - The No. 22 Louisville men's soccer team defeated Villanova 2-0 early Saturday afternoon in Nor'easter conditions. The field was covered in 2-3 inches of snow which started a half hour before the match began and it kept coming until midway through the second half and then turned to sleet and freezing rain. The lines on the field had to be shoveled to keep the game going.
Louisville's win puts them in fourth place of the Red Division, giving them home field advantage for the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Cardinals will host the fifth place team from the Blue Division on Wednesday night, Nov. 2 in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m.
Louisville was able to convert one of its four shots on goal in the first half in the 40th minute of play. Junior Brock Granger played a ball into the box from the right side, while Nick DeLeon flicked it to Buck Tufty. Tufty took the ball off his chest and hit a falling side volley to the back post.
The Cardinals finished the first half with a 12-4 shot advantage and a 3-2 corner kick advantage. Boudreaux finished with one save while Villanova's John Fogarty finished with three.
As the conditions went from snow to sleet in the second half, the Cardinals continued to apply offensive pressure to the Wildcat defense. The pressure worked as the Cardinals found the back of the net 16 minutes into the half. In the 62nd minute, Colin Rolfe slotted a ball through to Michael Roman on the right side. Roman sent a back post cross to DeLeon who sent it to the back of the net for the insurance goal, giving Louisville a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats were then forced to turn up the offensive pressure. Villanova had four shots on goal in the second half but Boudreaux made the stop on all four, securing his second consecutive shutout and his 35th career shutout.
Louisville finished the game with a 27-12 shot advantage, including 10 on goal. The Cards held a slight 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Boudreaux finished with five saves while Fogarty finished with eight.
