University of Louisville freshman tennis player Manuela Velasquez defeatead Wake Forest's Ryann Cutillo to win the B-Singles Flight at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday.
Velasquez took the first set 6-0 before Cutillo retired to give the Cardinal freshman her first tournament championship.
"Another good weekend for the Louisville women's team," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "This is the third weekend of tournaments and we have our third different winner. When we have our top two players not with us and are still able to win a high level event, it shows what we are building with this program. When you win singles and doubles it shows that you are a complete player. This is a great breakthrough for Manuela. She is just a freshman and winning a tournament like this really shows her potential. I am also really proud of Amelia Harris as well; she has had some ups and downs in her time here and for her to win a tournament like this is huge. It proves to her that working hard does pay."
Manuela Velasquez paired with Amelia Harris to win the doubles championship as well.
