VILLANOVA, Pa. - - Host Villanova edged the No. 20 University of Louisville field hockey team 2-1 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (8-6, 2-3) will face Drexel Sunday.
"This was a disappointing result, but Villanova was the better team today on their home surface," said head coach Justine Sowry. "They out-hustled us and beat us to the ball consistently. We now have to reevaluate our goals, get back to playing good hockey and work hard to earn a place in the Big East tournament."
The Wildcats (6-10, 2-2) snapped a five-game losing streak behind a pair of goals from Olivia Maggitti who put Villanova on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the 14:08 mark in the game.
The Cardinals had a chance to even the score when they were awarded a penalty corner with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, but the Wildcat defense stopped Dominique Pasqualichio's shot and Amber Thomas' shot went wide.
Louisville entered the break down 1-0, despite outshooting Villanova 11-7 and holding a 5-2 edge in penalty corners.
Maggitti notched her second goal of the game midway through the second half when she connected on penalty corner assist from Lauren Wilson to increase the Wildcats' lead to 2-0.
In the final 18 minutes of play, the Cards went on to outshoot Villanova 5-1 and drew six more corners and capitalized when junior Amber Thomas registered her third goal of the season with less than a minute remaining.
Junior Erin Conrad (8-6) collected five saves in the game as Louisville tallied 20 shots to Villanova's 11 and held a 15-3 advantage in corners. Villanova's Megan Goelz also had five stops in the game.
