LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three University of Louisville track and field athletes and two coaches were honored on Jan. 8 in Lexington at the sixth annual Kentucky Association of USA Track & Field/Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association (KTCCCA) awards banquet.
D'Ana McCarty was selected as the University Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Year, and Michael Eaton and Kim Grieshaber were chosen as the University Men's and Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Year, respectively. Head coach Ron Mann was named the University Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year, while head cross country coach Brice Allen was tabbed the University Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
At the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships, McCarty repeated as the weight throw national champion. She became the school's first repeat national titlist after breaking her previous record for the victory. Meanwhile, in cross country, Grieshaber put together a memorable senior season, as she earned all-Region honors for the first time in her career. She was the women's top-finisher in five of the team's six races, and she won the individual women's title at the Evansville Mid-America Opener. Eaton was the team's top finisher in five of seven races. He earned his third all-BIG EAST honor with a runner-up finish and his fourth career all-Region accolade with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Mann, who earned the same distinction last year, has set the tone since taking over the Louisville program, guiding the women's squad to its third-straight BIG EAST Championships outdoor title - a feat no other women's squad has accomplished since Louisville entered the league in 2006 - behind three individual titles. At the conclusion of the championships, Mann and staff were named the BIG EAST Outdoor Women's Coaching Staff of the Year for the third-straight season. In the indoor season, he helped direct the program's fourth national champion in program history - all of which have been under Mann's watch.
Under Allen, the 2009 KTCCCA University Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year, the men's cross country team earned a bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the fourth time in the last five years. After a team title at the Greater Louisville Classic, the men registered their second-best finish in program history at the BIG EAST Championships, taking second with three earning all-league honors (tied for most in program history). Allen then helped guide the men to a fifth-place finish, as two earned all-Region honors, before the squad earned an at-large bid to the national championships.
The Cardinals resume indoor season action on Friday, Jan. 14, in Lexington at the Kentucky Track and Field Invitational.
