The U of L women kicked off their fall schedule with an impressive showing in the first day of the 12 team 21st annual Spartan Invitational held at Michigan State University in East Lansing. The tournament consists of the Cards and 12 other teams made up several different conferences.
The Cards got off to a great start with two women, Mandy Brown and Julia Fellerhoff, in the top flight semi-finals and two more, Amelia Harris and Stefanie Villajuan, in the 3rd flight and 4th flight single semi-finals. It could be an all Cardinal final if sophomore Brown and freshman Fellerhoff get by the matches on Saturday.
Brown earned her way to the semis by beating Toledo's Amanda Border in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 and Marquette's Kelly Barry 6-3, 7-6. She will face University of Akron's Zara Harutyunyan who has breezed through the tournament with back to back 6-0, 6-1 wins.
Fellerhoff advanced with straight set wins as well over Miriam Westerlink of Eastern Michigan 6-4, 6-1 and Pollina Guimaraes of Toledo 7-5, 6-2. She is set to square of with Christine Chiricosta from Bowling Green on way to the possible all Cardinal final in the top flight.
Harris, going off in the 3rd flight, worked for a 6-3, 7-5 win over Marlya Toncheva and a 7-5,7-5 battle with Nicole Janek in the semis. Villajuan advanced to the semis in the 4th flight and gives U of L a good look at multiple final wins.
