
Cross Country Teams Prepare for Weekend Race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 18, in Annapolis, Md., to compete in the Navy Invitational and Salty Dog Invitational, respectively. The men start the day with their race at 11 a.m., with the women following at 11:30 a.m.
Both races will be held at Navy's cross country course, the USNA Golf Club.
The Cardinal men will be competing against runners from event-host Navy, Johns Hopkins, Maryland-Baltimore County, Mount St. Mary's, George Washington, Maryland, Malone, American and Elizabethtown. Four squads - Navy (fourth in Mid-Atlantic), American (fifth in Mid-Atlantic) Maryland (ninth in Mid-Atlantic) and Louisville (sixth in Southeast) - are regionally ranked, with the Cardinals being the only team to receive votes in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll.
Last time out, the men took runner-up at the Mid-America Opener on Sept. 4 in Evansville, Ind. Michael Eaton paced the team with a second-place showing. Three other Cardinals finished in the top 10: Tyler Byrne (seventh), Gordon Dooley (ninth) and Evan Hibbs (10th).
The Cardinal women will be competing against eight other squads on Saturday, consisting of American, George Washington, Johns Hopkins, Malone, Maryland, Mount St. Mary's, Maryland-Baltimore County and event-host Navy. Two of the squads - Maryland (sixth in Mid-Atlantic) and Navy (10th in Mid-Atlantic) - are regionally ranked.
In their season-opener, the women captured the team title at the Mid-America Opener behind a strong performance from BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week, Kim Grieshaber, who won the individual title. Emily Borsare (third), Monica Hernandez (fourth), Cassie Martin (seventh) and Ariel Briggs (eighth) finished the race inside the top 10.
