LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite a strong second half surge, the Louisville women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early disadvantage in a 2-1 exhibition loss to Tennessee on Saturday night at Cardinal Park.
Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Louisville cut the Tennessee advantage in half as freshman Christine Exeter's (Pickering, Ont./Pickering HS) flick found senior Caitlin Rehder (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West HS), who chipped from 15 yards away and cleared a charging Molly Baird in goal to find the back of the net in the 60th minute. The Cardinals added a couple of late scoring chances to even the score, but were unable to breakthrough for a goal.
"Obviously, you never like to lose and this game exposed some weaknesses where we must get better, but we're certainly an improved team," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I liked our heart as the game moved forward and we're absolutely moving in the right direction."
Tennessee opened the scoring in the 36th minute as Julie Edwards' shot from just outside the box got past junior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) for a 1-0 advantage. The goal came as the Cardinals' attempted to clear a corner kick by the Lady Vols.
The score remained that way until the 54th minute of play when Tennessee's Caroline Brown scored a header from deep inside the box following a well placed corner kick from Sanna Saarinen for a 2-0 advantage. From there, the Cardinals scored their goal for the final margin.
On Friday night, the Louisville women's soccer program opened the season with its Kickoff Dinner, where 1999 Team USA Women's World Cup hero and Olympic gold medalist Brandi Chastain was the featured guest.
Up next, Louisville will open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. ET against Eastern Kentucky at Cardinal Park.
