The University of Louisville softball team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to play Virginia (33-21) in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday, May 21 at 4 p.m. Host 15th ranked Tennessee (42-13) earned the overall No. 15 seed and will face Ball State (43-14) in the other regional matchup.
"I know this team is very excited to be going to the NCAA regionals," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We're certainly familiar with Tennessee, as we've been sent there twice in the past. We're looking forward to our opening game with Virginia. They are a very talented team and we will have to execute in all areas of our game."
The Cards earn their seventh consecutive NCAA tournament bid after posting a 39-17 overall record and finishing runner-up in the BIG EAST Conference tournament. This will mark the third time Louisville has traveled to Knoxville for NCAA regional play. In 2006 Cardinals advanced to the regional finals and were also sent there in 2008 when they went 1-2.
U of L and Virginia have met twice with the series even at 1-1. The last meeting between the teams took place on Feb. 15, 2009 with Louisville picking up a 6-5 win in the UNLV Desert Classic.
The winner of the Knoxville Regional will face the winner of the Ann Arbor Regional which includes host Michigan, Notre Dame, Illinois State and Wright State.
