
Track and Field Hosts Cardinal Twilight on Friday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams will return to action for the last of three meets at Cardinal Park Track Stadium when they host the Cardinal Twilight on Friday, May 14. It will mark their last attempt to earn and improve regional bids for the 2010 East Regional Championships.
Louisville will host the competition which features the likes of Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Notre Dame, Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky. The second annual Cardinal Twilight will commence at 10 a.m. ET, with the throwing events and will be followed by the jumps at 11:45 a.m. ET. The meet will conclude with the running events which begin at 6 p.m. ET.
"We are extremely excited and looking forward to hosting what should be another great meet," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "We have brought exactly what is needed to the Twilight meet in that it is going to be a high quality meet on the fun side, yet providing opportunity for a lot of people."
U of L has around 20 athletes that will compete in the 2010 East Regional. Senior Jere' Summers and junior D'Ana McCarty lead all athletes with three top bids apiece in the shot put, discus and hammer. Summers' mark in the discus is currently third in the East Region and her hammer throw is currently fourth. McCarty's mark in the shot put is currently 11th while her hammer throw is fifth.
On the men's side, the Cards have two bids apiece from senior Tone Belt (seventh in the long jump and tenth in the high jump) and senior Andre Black (fourth in the triple jump and 38th in the long jump. Junior Matt Hughes currently holds the fastest time in the East Region and the nation's fourth fastest overall time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Cardinal women won their third consecutive conference team title at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on April 30-May 2, while the men finished in second behind Notre Dame for the second straight year. Overall, the Cards won 7 event titles and 19 medals.
U of L picked up numerous other honors, including being named the 2010 BIG EAST Women's Coaching Staff of the Year for the third straight season. Senior Jere' Summers was named the women's Most Outstanding Field Performer for the third consecutive year after winning both the discus and hammer. Junior Matt Hughes was named the men's Most Outstanding Track Performer following wins in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run.
"We are right where we want to be right now" said Coach Mann.
The Cards will have a week off to prepare for the 2010 NCAA East Regional Championships on May 28-29 which will be held in Greensboro, N.C. The regional is one of two qualifying events for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships that will be held on June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
