LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The nationally ranked University of Louisville men's and women's track and field squads teamed with the University of Kentucky to win the first ever Border Battle against Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame held Saturday at Cardinal Park. The men won 103-99 while the women won 100-96.
"I think it went absolutely great! The one thing that I wanted was a great competition and a well-run track and field meet. We had a great day for track and field and we had great competition" said U of L Head Coach Ron Mann. "Every event was very competitive and it is always great to have a win. It was a great competition that went back and forth with the commonwealth getting a win in the end."
On the men's side, senior Steven Hnat smashed his previous school record for the second week in a row with a throw of 61-02.00 (18.64m) to win the shot put.
Sophomore Jacques Caldwell won the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.53. Fellow sophomore Jordan Frazier won the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.93. Junior Matt Hughes won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.42.
Seven-time All-American Tone Belt won the long jump with a leap of 25-06.00 (7.77m).
The most exciting race of the day possibly could have been the men's 5,000-meters with junior Michael Eaton winning in 14:10.51 to beat teammate and BIG EAST Indoor 5,000-meter champion Matt Bruce. The two were the only runners to pull away from the pack and traded leads many times throughout the race.
On the women's side, junior D'Ana McCarty won the hammer throw with a toss of 204-02 (62.24m). Senior Jere' Summers won the discus with a throw of 181-04 (55.28m) but fouled on all of her attempts in the hammer throw.
Freshman Michelle Theophille won the high jump clearing a height of 5-08.00. Sophomore Charachesicia Lockhart won the women's long jump with a leap of 19-03.50 (5.88m).
The Cards will return to action April 16 as they host the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational, the second of three meets to be held at Cardinal Park this season.
