LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Ron Mann has released the outdoor portion of the 2010-11 track and field schedule on Thursday, which features a pair of home meets and the Alabama and Pepsi Florida Relays.
"This is certainly one of the most competitive and broad-based outdoor schedules we've put together at Louisville," head coach Ron Mann says. "It is thorough and well thought out, with emphasis on team and individual dynamics, weather conditions as well as ensuring a competitive format."
The Cardinal women are coming off their third-straight BIG EAST Outdoor title, a feat no other women's squad in the league has been able to accomplish since the Cardinals entered the league in 2006. The group had two athletes win three event titles - Jere' Summers won the discus and hammer throw, and Khadija Abduallah captured the shot put title. Additionally, the women had top-five finishes in eight different events.
Louisville begins its outdoor season in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with the Alabama Relays on March 26, marking the first time since the 2003-04 season the Cardinals have competed there. The team will split the following week on April 2, with the throwers traveling to Gainesville, Fla., for the Pepsi Florida Relays and the rest of the team heading northwest to the Purdue Mike Poehlein Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
On April 9, Louisville will play host to the annual Border Battle. The event pits the state of Kentucky - Louisville and Kentucky - against the state of Indiana - Notre Dame and Indiana. Last year, the men won, 103-99, while the women took a 100-96 decision.
After splitting squads again from April 15-17, with the throwers and jumpers traveling to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., and the middle distance and distance runners and sprinters competing at the Mt. SAC Relays in California, Louisville will compete at home in a double-dual in the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on April 22. The four-team field is comprised of Louisville, Illinois State, Western Kentucky and Central Michigan.
Following nearly a week-long break, the Cardinals will compete April 28-30 at the Drake and Penn Relays before setting their sights on the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships May 6-8 in Philadelphia, Pa., as Villanova University will play host to the event.
Louisville returns home for the Cardinal Twilight on May 13, and then heads north to Bloomington, Ind., from May 26-28 for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, where individuals will attempt to advance and qualify for the national championships.
The 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, are set to take place from June 8-11. The four-day competition was last held at Drake in 2008.
