Louisville, Ky. - Hello everyone! Cardinal Basketball season is finally here! There is a lot of excitement floating around the Cards! The new arena, the freshman class, opening up the KFC Yum! Center with Tennessee, and of course having more healthy players than injured!
As you all know, our freshmen were ranked as one of the Top 5 recruiting classes in the nation. We are so excited about their immediate contributions and all they are bringing to the team. So I would like to introduce them to you before you see them in action this weekend.
First up is Antonita Slaughter - Be prepared to bring your flashlights and candles because she will SHOOT THE LIGHTS OUT! She is a Kentucky native and one of our best 3-point shooters.
Next, Shawnta' Dyer - She is a strong, hard working post player. Silent but deadly on the court....but loud and crazy when she's chilling with the team (especially Polly).
Then there is Polly Harrington - She is very dedicated to this team and the game of basketball. On top of regular team workouts and conditioning, Polly met with our conditioning coach before class every morning to get in extra cardio so she could get in shape and be able to help our team. Today she is 35 pounds lighter than she was when she came here.
Next up is Shoni Schimmel - AKA Showtime...AKA Shake `Em Schimmel....she is our Rondo (but she can shoot :). She is very fun to watch and even more fun to play with. We have to always keep our hands up and ready when she has the ball because she will throw a behind the back, between the legs, blindfolded, with no hands type of pass...and complete it!
Next is Charmaine Tay - AKA Too Cool- She is a combo guard with Jersey swag who loves to drive to the basket and finish with a "cool" move. She is very laid back but don't let that fool you because she plays very hard.
Finally there is Sheronne Vails -Derty Bird- She is our 6'4,long, tall, shot blocker...and yes, she can dunk! She runs the floor like a track star and will shoot over just about anyone. She got her nickname for a couple reasons: she runs fast with long legs and her chest poked out like an ostrich, she also reminds us of Big Bird from Sesame Street, and Coach has a hard enough time distinguishing the different "Sh" names.
We are playing a new defense that will show our speed and athleticism. We're looking to play at a faster pace that will get us a lot of easy buckets and entertain the crowd. We had the opportunity to scrimmage Marshall over the weekend and we definitely got better and worked out some kinks before a week of preparation for our season opener against Tennessee.
Friday will be here before you know it! We'll be ready .....WILL YOU? #25
