LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Ron Mann has revealed the indoor portion of the 2010-11 track and field schedule on Friday. The slate is highlighted by a pair of in-state meets and multiple nationally renowned events.
"This is arguably one of the best schedules we've put together," Mann says. "We'll be facing top competition from some of the best teams in the ACC, SEC, Big Ten and the BIG EAST."
The Cardinals open the season in Carbondale, Ill., with the Fast Start Invitational on Dec. 3 on the campus of Southern Illinois University. Two seasons ago, Louisville competed at the event and dominated the field, winning six individual titles and earning a pair of NCAA Championship provisional qualifiers. Saravia Richardson, at the time, set a school record in the 60-meter dash, which she has since broken.
After winter break, the Cardinals return to action on Jan. 15 at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, before heading north to the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., on Jan. 22. A week later, the Cardinals return to Lexington to compete at the Rod McCravy Memorial on Jan. 29.
On Feb. 5, Louisville will send split squads to the Virginia Tech Elite Meet (Blacksburg, Va.) and the 24th edition of the Meyo Invitational (South Bend, Ind.). The Cards recorded 10 qualifying marks at the Meyo Invitational last season.
Prior to the league championships, the Cardinals will descend into Fayetteville, Ark., for the prestigious Tyson Invitational on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The meet is set to take place Feb. 11-12.
"The Tyson Invitational is a national-level meet, where our top-level athletes are going to see the nation's top level competition on a track similar to the national championships," Mann adds. "It's a nationally televised meet, with a great venue and excellent competition from the SEC, Pac 10 and the Big Ten."
Louisville closes the indoor season with the BIG EAST Championships Feb. 19-20 in Akron, Ohio, the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 5 in South Bend, Ind., and the NCAA Championships, held in College Station, Texas, on March 11-12.
At last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, three Cardinals earned All-America honors, while the women earned their highest team finish in program history, tying for 21st at the national event.
