Louisville Rowing Seniors Defeat Alumnae at Red-Black Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing program hosted the fourth annual Red-Black Day on Saturday morning at the Cardinal Boathouse on River Road. For the third straight year, the event included several intra-squad scrimmage races, a pair of races featuring Louisville rowing alumnae and concluded with a cookout for the rowers and coaches.
The featured race of the day had the Cards' varsity eight boat, comprised of juniors and seniors, earning an open-water win over the Louisville alumnae. U of L's varsity boat included coxswain Ellen Fawcett, Lauren Mensch, Kristin Falovo, Anastasia Prokopenko, Cara Littleton, Sam Kayser, Chelsea Haack, Kira Lawson, and Allison Siu.
In the first eights race of the day, the Cards' senior crew of Prokopenko, Falovo, Mensch, Littleton, Kayser, Haack, Lawson, Siu, and coxwain Tara McKiernan earned a two-seat length win over the freshman crew.
The alumni team, comprised of Jess Grigsby, Nicole Alderson, Kristin Bloom, Kathryn Hagglund, and coxwain Ashley Edwardson, won by bow to stern over the sophomore team in the second race of the day.
In the second eights race, U of L's Novice Red boat earned a six-seats length victory over the Black crew. The Red crew was made up of Alison Jenkins, Kellie Grigsby, Hannah Ritter, Morgan Baumgartle, Shelby Hastings, Molly Kelly, Cassie Kolder, Katie Howard, and coxwain Irena Tran.
The third eights race featured an International versus USA matchup, with the International team winning by bow to stern. Prokopenko, Morgan Dunham, Katya Monchenko, Falovo, Alex Roberts, Catherine Chivers, Kira Lawson, Kayser, and coxswain Fawcett were the members of the winning International team.
In the final intra-squad scrimmage of the day, the Cards' Red mixed varsity/novice crew of Kylie Wrenn, Amanda Ritter, Grigsby, Kathleen O'Connell, Shelby Stafford, Siu, Howard, Paula Gollnick, and coxwain McKiernan picked up an open water win over the Black crew.
The seniors prevailed over the alumni in an open water win to finish off the event. The senior eights boat consisted of Mensch, Falovo, Prokopenko, Littleton, Kayser, Haack, Lawson, Siu, and coxwain Fawcett.
The Cardinals will next compete on Nov. 5 at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn.
