LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season with a 1-0 road defeat at Kentucky on Saturday night at the UK Soccer Complex.
Kentucky forward Giuleana Lopez scored the only goal of the game and her first of the season with a header on a corner kick from Jenna Goblirsch in the 19th minute of action for the decisive goal against the Cardinals (1-1).
"It was a very physical and competitive match tonight," said Cards' head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "During the first half of the match, Kentucky competed extremely hard and we didn't match them. They scored a very good goal early, so we were chasing the game a bit from then on. I was happy with the way we fought back in the second half, but unfortunately, we couldn't find the goal we needed. It was a challenging game that we will learn from because moving forward, it will only make us stronger."
Trailing 1-0 after the halftime break, the Cardinals out-shot the Wildcats (2-0) 6-3 over the final 45 minutes, including a pair of shots in the final 12 minutes of action from Kate Cunningham (wide right) and Katie Owen (wide left).
Overall, Louisville out-shot Kentucky 9-5 led by a pair of shots on-goal from junior Caitlin Rehder. The Cardinals also finished with a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks. Cards' freshman goalkeeper Taylor Vancil finished the night with four saves matching the total of UK goalkeeper Sydney Hiance.
Up next, Louisville will host the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic on Sept. 4-6 at Cardinal Park. U of L will host South Carolina on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. ET, and Saint Louis on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. The event will also feature Cincinnati against Saint Louis on Friday at 5 p.m., and South Carolina against Cincinnati on Sunday at 11 a.m.
