PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior catcher Melissa Roth has been named BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week on May 4 - marking the fourth time this season she has earned the honor.
Roth (Long Beach, Calif.) led the Cardinals to a 3-1 performance on the week, batting .545 (6 for 11) with a double, a triple and two home runs which produced six runs and five RBI. Roth was also hit by three pitches and drew a walk to notch a .667 on base percentage and registered a 1.364 slugging percentage. In conference play, she batted .600 (3 for 5) with all three of her hits falling in for extra bases - including a timely home run in the top of the seventh to pull Louisville within a run - in the 6-5 win over Notre Dame. She had at least one hit and one run in each of her games on the week and her home run in the sixth proved to be the game winner in the 2-0 victory over in-state rival Kentucky.
Roth owns the single season record for runs with 62 and is one home run away from tying the single season record of 17 set by Courtney Moore in 2005.
The Cardinals (46-8) will face Connecticut in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Conference Tournament Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
