
Louisville Impresses at Cardinal Twilight

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams earned 15 regional bids, won six event titles and set a school record at the second annual Cardinal Twilight on Friday at Cardinal Park. It marked their final attempt to earn and improve regional marks for the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships.
The Cardinal women were led by the record breaking performance of junior Saravia Richardson in the 100-meter dash. Richardson won the race as she set a personal best and clipped her own school record with an improved regional time of 11.57. The Moreno Valley, Calif. native also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.27.
"Today was a great meet and we were glad to host," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "It was great not only for everyone on the track, but also for everything that goes into hosting a championship level meet, including the athletes, coaches and officials. Overall, it was a good tune-up for the regional championships and a special day on the track with Richardson setting a new school record in the 100m and many others achieving personal bests."
Sophomore D'Ana McCarty earned three regional qualifying marks. McCarty won the hammer throw with a toss of 190-04 (58.02m), while junior Lindsey Cook came in second with a heave of 168-09 (51.44m). McCarty placed third in the shot put with a throw of 50-05.50 (15.38m), improving her national ranking. The Indianapolis, Ind. native also took third in the discus with a distance of 158-07 (48.35m).
The Cards earned four regional marks in the shot put as they took first, second and third overall. Junior Jere' Summers won the event with a throw of 51-10 (15.80m) and was followed by freshman Khadija Abdullah with a toss of 50-07.50 (15.43m).
Sophomore Chinwe Okoro won the discus with an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying throw of 162-04 (49.47m). Okoro also finished fifth in the shot put with an improved qualifying mark of 48-09.50 (14.87m).
Junior Brittany Howard won the long jump with a leap of 18-05 (5.61m).
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Kelsey Page finished runner-up with a time of 11:06.38, the second best in school history.
Freshman Megan Schubert finished second in the high jump, clearing 5-07 (1.70m). It matched her career best.
Juniors Tarah McKay and Kat Alcorn finished second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run with times of 2:11.10 and 2:11.20. It marked a personal best for Alcorn.
Redshirt freshman Emily Borsare finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a personal record time of 17:17.23, while redshirt sophomore Kim Grieshaber took third after crossing in 17:19.43.
On the men's side, the Cards were led by redshirt junior Steven Hnat who finished third in the shot put with a throw of 57-00.25 (17.38m). It marked the sixth time he has reached regional status this season. Sophomore Weston Banks took fifth in the event with a regional mark of 56-01.25 (17.10m).
The men's discus saw three Cards improve their regional qualifying marks. Sophomore Josh Greenwald led the group with a second place throw of 189-10 (57.86m). Senior Andrew Hackney placed third with a toss of 186-08 (56.91m), while Hnat took sixth out of 16 competitors with a distance of 175-10 (53.59m).
The Cards added a new regional bid in the long jump as redshirt freshman Seon Powell placed second with a personal best leap of 24-01.50 (7.35m). Powell also placed third in the triple jump with a personal record distance of 48-11.50 (14.92m).
Hackney finished fourth in the hammer throw with a personal best and improved regional qualifying mark of 200-01 (60.98m). It was the fifth best throw in school history.
In the high jump, sophomore Neil Angermeier won with a personal best height of 6-08.75 (2.05m).
Sophomore Chris Wolfe placed third in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 1:51.86, while freshman Luke Lovelace finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run as he clocked the fourth fastest time in school history, 3:51.45.
Unattached winners included Andre Black in the long jump (24-05/7.44m) and triple jump (52-01/15.87m), Paul Coover in the pole vault (17-06.50/5.35m), former U of L star James Dennis in the discus (193-06/58.97m), Renee Hein in the high jump (5-10.75/1.80m), Ben Hubers in the 1,500-meter run (3:47.08) and Robert Klenk in the hammer throw (215-05/65.65m).
"I feel very good about our team entering regionals," said Mann. "We are healthy and ready to go. It is going to be a great showcase of track and field here at the University of Louisville."
The Cards will have a week off to prepare for the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships on May 29-30 which will be hosted by Louisville for the first-time ever. The regional is one of four qualifying meets for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships that will be held on June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
