LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Kristen Wadwell's RBI single in the sixth scored Kassie Stanfill to give the No. 20/22 University of Louisville softball team a 2-1 win over Bradley in the first game of the Louisville Softball Tournament Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (15-2) will face No. 8/9 Michigan Saturday at noon.
"Bradley is a good team and they jumped on us early," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We came out flat today and it took us a while to get going. I thought that we did a good job of hanging in there and I'm proud of how we fought back to get the win."
The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lauren Meister singled and took second on Julie Sherman's sacrifice bunt. Megan O'Malley's groundout moved Meister to third and Miriam Wegmann singled her home.
U of L had runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth, but finally came through with two runs in the sixth. Kristi Cunningham drew a walk and took second on a wild pitch. A fielding error allowed Stanfill to reach and sent Cunningham to third. Brittany York's base hit plated Cunningham to tie the game at 1-1. Wadwell stepped up to the plate and delivered a single to score Stanfill for the game-winner.
Wadwell (10-2) got the complete game win, surrendering one earned run on six hits and striking out nine. Colby Wherry was 2 for 2, Melissa Roth and York were 2 for 3 to help the Cards amass eight hits in the game.
Amanda Clack (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and striking out three. The Braves (7-6) defeated Ohio 6-0 in the second game of the Louisville Softball Tournament.
