The University of Louisville's Colby Wherry was named BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week on Monday, March 2.
Wherry, a sophomore shortstop from Goodlettsville, Tenn., helped the Cards to a 2-0 performance in a weather-shortened weekend at the Red & Black Tournament. She was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, four runs scored and two RBIs. She registered a 2.250 slugging percentage and also played flawless defense with five assists on the weekend.
Louisville opened the Red & Black tournament with a 9-1, five inning win over Miami (OH) on Friday, and defeated IUPUI 8-0 in five innings on Saturday before inclement weather forced the cancellation of two games against Western Illinois.
The University of Louisville softball team is currently No. 21 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and No. 23 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll. The Cards will host the University of Louisville Tournament March 6-8, the field features Tennessee Tech, Loyola and a rematch with No. 6 Michigan which handed U of L one of its two losses early this season - a 3-2 decision in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Feb. 13.
