COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Louisville's Andre Black finished 12th in the men's triple jump at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium, while the Cardinal women earned their highest team finish in school history.
"Andre has been a real gem to our program and we are thankful for all that he has done," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "He didn't have the outcome we would have liked and so we will have to go back and evaluate what happened and make sure he is prepared for the outdoor season."
Black, a red-shirt junior, concluded the indoor season with a leap of 51-09.75 (15.79m), his second longest jump of the season. Black entered the final day of competition with the fifth best mark in the event on the NCAA descending order list which he set on Jan .17. The Mobile, Ala. native had won every previous triple jump competition he entered this season.
The Cardinal women continued to make history on the final day of the championships despite not having any athletes competing. U of L earned their highest team finish in program history (Tied for 22nd) with 10 points, which were earned on D'Ana McCarty's win in the weight throw. Louisville had scored only one other time at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships when they finished 37th with six points.
"It's an honor to finish in the top 25 and we are continuing to move in the right direction," said Mann.
U of L head coach Ron Mann continues the program's rise on the national scene as the Cardinals have won three NCAA individual titles in three years. Prior to Mann taking over the reigns in 2004, the Cards had amassed just three NCAA All-Americans and had never scored in the NCAA Championships. Since then Mann has coached 15 NCAA All-Americans and led teams to score in six national championships.
"This has been a great weekend for our program and now we have a few days to get ready to head to Arizona to begin our outdoor season which we are very optimistic about," said Mann.
The Cards will open the 2009 Outdoor Track & Field season on March 20-21 at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
