LEXINGTON, Ky. - The second day of events concluded at the Kentucky Invitational on Saturday at the Nutter Field House in Lexington. The nationally ranked men's and women's track and field teams picked up where they left off on Friday, posting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and seven top-five finishes.
"For us to come out and compete with some of the best athletes and teams in the country really says a lot about how well we are progressing," said U of L head Coach Ron Mann. "We have the potential to do really great things this year and it gives us an opportunity to gauge where we are at as a program."
In a meet that featured no team scoring, freshman Wesley Smith led the way for the No. 9 ranked Cardinal men. Smith, from Chesapeake, Va., placed second in the long jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and personal best leap of 25-02.50. The jump was the fifth best in the NCAA this season.
"Smith had a great performance and particularly as a freshman," said Mann. "His mark which is one of the best in the NCAA this season should land him a bid in the NCAA Championships."
Sophomore Michael Eaton finished third in the mile, posting a time of 4:12.94. Sophomore Chris Wolfe picked up a BIG EAST qualifying mark after placing ninth in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 1:53.68.
Leading the way for the No. 25 ranked Cardinal women was junior Amaka Omenyinma who finished second in the long jump with a leap of 19-04.25. Junior Rachel Gehret, the defending BIG EAST outdoor high jump champion, placed third clearing a personal best height of 5-09.25. The mark was the third best in program history.
Redshirt sophomore Tarah McKay finished fourth and set new personal bests in both the 800-meter run (2:12.96) and the mile (4:52.08). The times placed her first (tied) and second, respectively, on the school's all-time list. Junior Kat Alcorn crossed a few steps behind her teammate in the 800-meter run also posting a personal best time of 2:13.29 to earn fifth place.
Others adding to the record books included, sophomore Emily Borsare who ran a 9:49.77 (fifth all-time) in the 3,000-meter run and senior team co-captain Heather Trimiew with a time of 56.05 (fourth all-time).
"We will have a week to prepare for what should be another outstanding meet," said Mann. "I fully expect us to come out and perform at a higher level on a week-to week basis."
The Cardinals will travel next to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Gene Edmonds Cup on Jan. 24.
