Louisville, Ky. - As an integral part of Louisville's historical freshman class, Memphis native Mary Jackson, plans to make an early impact. Jackson began her transformation from high school to collegiate ball at the start of the summer, in the weight room and on the court; she quickly realized the competitive bar was significantly raised.
"You have better athletes, the top athletes, so you have to work hard," commented the freshman guard. "You have to work even harder to keep up with them. You have to work even harder because you're a freshman and you want to earn respect."
Prior to joining the Louisville roster, Jackson concluded a solid career at Oak Haven High School. Ranked 80th in the nation among the 2008 recruiting class, Jackson was named the District 16-AA Most Valuable Player last season. In her senior year Jackson was an all-state selection after averaging 29 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
Said to be a hard worker with endless passion for the game, Jackson is undoubtedly up for the challenge. Shooting 78 percent from the field and 31 percent from the 3-point line during her high school years, she will be an outstanding fit for the Cardinal offensive structure.
With confidence in her abilities, Head Coach Jeff Walz, is pleased to add an offensive threat to this season's squad.
"We are excited to have signed such a high quality and gifted student-athlete," Walz said. "Mary is a very versatile player who can dominate the glass and finish with contact."
Showing great intelligence on and off the court, Jackson graduated valedictorian of her senior class and anticipates declaring a major in communications.
